Fresh & Easy Is My New Market

This weekend I officially broke it off with Ralph’s and started shopping at Fresh & Easy. This new market makes it easy for me to shop for all my food. The store is smaller then a tradition market but seems to have everything I need. It is clean (this is huge on my list) and the meats don’t look like they have been sitting out for days. They don’t have a deli or a butcher but that is ok with me. The only thing that I have to get used to is the fruit and veggie section. The fruits and veggies are pre-bundled in bags so you can’t pick and choose by hand. But on a positive note, no one is touching your food (again back to the clean point).

Everyone that works there seems to be a bit on the young side and in positive spirits. They offer a lot of Fresh & Easy brand products and they don’t taste generic. Also, they have been sending me coupons. A months worth at a time. They are good for a week and deduct on your total bill not on individual items.

If you get a chance check a store out. They are popping up all of Los Angeles. Find a Fresh & Easy Market.

I totally went and have been meaning to go again… I almost stopped by there today on my way in, but didn’t know if they were open yet.

I discovered these guys a while back when i picked up a moped in orange a few months back. It was a random stop and was really bummed that there wasn’t one near costa mesa! ;( What i liked was that it reminded so much of shopping markets in europe. The clean presentation of the store, nicely designed packaged foods, and the not so in your face marketing gimmicks for EVERYTHING. I researched it more about the stores when i got home and found out they were owned by the English co. TESCO, Aha!. It’s about time for another british invasion!

I really wanted to be onboard with fresh and easy. I shopped there months ago at the store in Orange (Chapman and Main). Now, six months later they have opened a store at Chapman and Tustin, about a mile and a half away. fresh and easy is a viral corporation that will result in the loss of what was once considered one of the best “unskilled” jobs you could get, that of grocery store checker. Now maybe the market (economic market, not Fresh and Easy) is determining this, and that point could be argued. The people at Fresh and Easy were nice enough, but they have replaced 6 checkers with 1 or 2 people who oversee the self checkout system. This reduction in labor lets them charge seemingly ridiculously low prices for groceries. personally, I feel like this is the wrong move in an economy that is facing job losses everywhere. Much like having to pay more taxes to support social services, I will gladly pay more for my groceries if it means that my neighborhood grocery store can support its staff. I’m not saying you should take this approach, but this is the decision i have come to about fresh and easy. I do not feel that they support my vision of community.
My other huge gripe was the quality of the food that i got there. The meat, produce and especially the prepackaged foods like salad dressing and canned goods just tasted cheap to me. It’s like an entire store of stater brothers pop.

I only buy fresh produce and meat from the 99Cent Store,,,or if I am in a bind, maybe Big Lots. Nothing worse than buying some hippie vegetables from Whole Foods and having it go bad less than a day later.

I see the economic battle cry, but for one publicly anti social person like myself, I like not having to awkwardly watch some dude who looks like AL BUNDY scan my food and push the enter button.
The Vons by me really over prices everything to support their “mood lighting” electric bills. I hate going to any grocery store, so Fresh and Easy made it easy to get in and out without roaming a huge ass store. Added bonus they have those chili crackers that are addicting.
