My thoughts on Prop 8 and its message.

What Prop 8 is really all about

What Prop 8 is really all about

I think the photo above should sum up my sentiments on the passage of Prop 8.

It’s now been almost 3 weeks since it passed, and with each new weekend, I feel the dread that pretty soon the steam will run out and we will all go back to our complacent, apathetic selves. I know I was one of those people before the election. Not necessarily apathetic, but more along the lines, “This thing will never pass. San Diego, LA, & San Francisco will make up for all the “other” counties who will surely vote for prop 8.”  I know I was not alone in that thinking.

Where the Wild Things Are *Update*

Wild Things

The LA Times did a story on Friday on the status of “Where the Wild Things Are,” with an interview an exec. at Warner Brothers. Sadly it sounds like this won’t see the light of day anytime soon. I’d love to read some of the reactions the test audience had for the first screening.
“Something has gone very wrong with “Where the Wild Things Are,” the much-anticipated Spike Jonze adaptation of Maurice Sendak’s classic children’s book. The $80-million film, with a script by literary cool-guy Dave Eggers, was filmed largely in the second half of 2006 in Australia. It was originally slated for release this October but got pushed back to the fall of 2009. Last week it disappeared entirely from the Warner Bros. release schedule, a sign of continuing troubles.”

Update: Dish Network won’t return my calls for dropping 75% of their HD channels. I’m filing a class action lawsuit

Posted by davelip in whateves on May 29th, 2008 @ 5:00 pm

re: http://whateves.com/index.php?s=dish+network&Submit=go

So if you didn’t notice in the post i did last week, in which I mentioned how Dish HD decided to drop 75% of their HD channels that were provided by VOOM (Monsters HD, Kung Fu HD, Rave, Gallery, etc.) I was pissed. To the point that I dwelled on the subject all weekend. Especially since over the wekeend, I wasn’t able to watch anymore awesome Horror movies in HD (Hellraiser, The Thing, Evil Dead 1&2, etc.). I’ve been forced to watch the poop that Dish Network has put up to replace the 15 HD channels they dropped.

Needless to say my 7 phone calls to Dish Network still left me with little satisfaction. I set out to see what I could find and discovered the Dish Network User forum. I decided to take my anger over there in a post, basically saying I’m gonna sue fucking Dish Network for taking away Voom! Well apparently I hit a wasps nest cuz these bastards got all worked up. I think I bring up some valid points in my argument on there, but those bastards are relentless.

In the meantime, i am still waiting for somebody to poop on their Dish HD Satellite and send in a photo!

Anybody know any good lawyers I can call who will take my case?

Dish Network Drops VOOM HD channels, which were some of their best!

Posted by davelip in whateves on May 22nd, 2008 @ 3:45 pm

Omygod omygod omygod. After a year of looking for the perfect flat screen tv, then waiting another 5 weeks to decide whether to stay with Dish Network or try Direct TV HD, I come to learn that some of my favorite HD channels on DISH Network are now GONE GONE GONE! The horror! No longer can you watch cheezy awesome Kung Fu Movies from the 60’s to 80’s all day long. No longer can you watch awesomely bad horror movies in HD on Monsters HD. No more HDAlt channel which showed random shit all day long like crazy screen savers that would make you drool if you were dropping acid. ALL IN HD!

Instead Dish Network has replaced those 15 VOOM HD channels with THESE winners:

ABC Family HD: Yeah no.
Biography HD: I wanna see documentary’s on old dead dudes in HD??!?!?!
Comcast Sports Network Bay Area HD: I’m gay, and I live in Los Angeles. I don’t care about San Francisco sports
Comcast Sports Network New England HD: Again, the gay part and the LA thing.
CNBC HD: I have stocks, I don’t need to see what they look like in HD damnit!
Disney HD East: What so I can look at Hannah Montana’s pre-pubsecent vomit fest in HD?!
ESPNews HD: Again, gay here! I don’t care what’s on ESPN, unless its Naked volleyball or Naked anything in HD!
Hallmark Movie Channel HD: Watch movies about fat women being beaten by their drunken husbands? Oh wait that would be Lifetime, which is NOT offered in HD.
Weather Channel HD: Its the fucking weather channel! Why the shit do I care whether the 5 day forecast is in HD??!

World Fishing Network HD: Are you fucking kidding me?!
I haven’t been this upset about tv in a long time, which is probably why I didn’t watch that much tv. Anybody want a plasma tv now?! Not that it will make a difference, but I’ve been told to call and complain, and get lots of others who liked those channels to complain as well. So here’s the number to complain!!

How do you know when you live among white trash?

Posted by davelip in whateves on April 18th, 2008 @ 10:54 am

I’m from the East Coast, about 25 minutes west of Philadelphia. Drexel Hill to be specific.

Growing up wasn’t easy. My neighborhood was mostly Irish Catholic working class. When I wasn’t busy being bullied or having pennies thrown at me because I had a Jewish last name, I was tormented because I didn’t have a girlfriend, etc. Only in my neighborhood is it proper to walk around in a wife beater t-shirt and saggy pants while  smoking a cigarette with your girlfriend by your side. If you see two people like that, they’re probably 13, and the girl is probably pregnant.
Where am I going with all this? Well, just sort of setting things up for the photo I’ve included. I wasn’t the least bit surprised when my sister, who has the good fortune of still living back in Drexel Hill,PA, sent me this photo. A neighbor down the street decided St. Patty’s Day was a great day to have a lawn display set up to celebrate this day of Irish Drunkenness. What the hell is St. Patty’s Day anyways?

I only WISH, I had a photo of the lawn display that was set up only a few days after 9-11. That marvelous wonder featured a dark skinned man of mid-eastern descent, WITH A TURBIN NO LESS, lying on his back. Standing above him majestically was a white man, dressed like a firefighter, holding an axe in mid air, about to take his revenge out on Mr. Abdulah Rahmajanandad. Enjoy.

New TRS-80 Video

TRS 80
I’m a fan of TRS-80 and love their new song, Tinted, which has a different sound from their previous electronic albums. The video that goes along with I can’t stop watching. Reminds me of college and some of the stuff we’d do in the TV studios with their cool old cameras.

Enjoy. :)

Candlelight Vigil in West Hollywood in Memory of Slain Oxnard Student

Posted by davelip in whateves on February 19th, 2008 @ 10:52 pm

Last week in Oxnard, a 15 year old 8th grader who was openly gay, was shot and killed in his classroom by a fellow student. The murder has been deemed a hate crime.

To pay tribute to Lawrence “Larry” King, a candlelight vigil has been organized here in West Hollywood. This vigil will also be simlutaniously held statewide in both Sacramento and Fresno.  The vigil will begin at 7pm at West Hollywood Park, 647 N. San Vicente Blvd.

Please come out and show your support. The vigils will remember Larry and unite the community in spreading the message that stronger anti-bullying policies and anti-bias educational programs are needed in schools.

For more information on the events surrounding the shooting, check out the LA Times articles:

I Be Area

I came across these videos through a friend, then read an article that the New York Times just did on this series and the artist. I don’t know why but I am completely entranced by it. It’s like watching a magic marker/highlighter painting done by somebody on crystal meth. The video below is just a brief clip from their 1hr 45min film. wow. Enjoy.

Dealing with the Dark Side (of at&t)

Posted by davelip in whateves on December 12th, 2007 @ 5:28 pm

I’ve had AT&T cell phone service for 7 years now. ATT, then Cingular, now “the new AT&T.” New as in, new ways to screw you over. Their service has gotten shittier and shittier, and I have turned more and more into “angry old man” when I call them with some jacked up charge. Needless to say, I was overjoyed when they ALSO took over SBC telephone service & Internet/DSL, which I also have.
I won’t bore everyone with details, but needless to say, I finally had it out with ATT’s poopfest, and decided to put my foot down. What happened? Well I saved $20 a month on my DSL service and over $100 on a cell phone bill after I was repeatedly told by AT&T they couldn’t help me. (For those of you who are new to the dark side with Iphones, be prepared.) When the time comes, here’s what you can do to save yourself some money and hassle of dealing with knitwit operators at AT&T.

File a complaint online with the California Public Utilities Commission. It literally takes about 5 mins. In 3-4 weeks of filing, you’ll get a call from an ATT rep. kissing your butt asking what they can do to help. It’s that simple!

Where are they now? (Atreayu from Never Ending Story)

Posted by davelip in whateves on November 21st, 2007 @ 4:53 pm

Atreyu

When I was 8, seeing The Never Ending Story was one of the best experiences of my childhood. Being a closeted 8 year old, the second best thing about that movie was Atreayu. Having the hugest crush on him (and co-star Barret Oliver), I used to think how much fun it would be if we were friends and hung out (Hey when you’re 8 and don’t have many friends, this is what you do).

In any event, I was bored at work last week, looking shit up on IMDB, and came across Never Ending Story and looked up Atreayu. Needless to say, somebody left a link to his myspace page. He’s all tattooed up now, married, stoned and living in Studio City.

Date Rape Drugs for Kids!

Posted by davelip in whateves on November 8th, 2007 @ 12:19 pm

Date Rape Dots for Kids

More than four million Chinese-made toys sold in the U.S. as Aqua Dots are being recalled after reports surfaced that children swallowed beads containing a chemical found to mimic the effects of the so-called date-rape drug.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission said it has received two reports of children swallowing Aqua Dots and slipping into comas. Both children are now fine, the commission said. At least three children have been hospitalized in Australia, where the product is called Bindeez, after ingesting beads from the toy.
