AP alleges copyright infringement of Obama image

Posted by in art, design, politics, whateves on February 4th, 2009 @ 8:51 pm

Unless you have been living under a rock for the past year, you have seen the Shepard Fairey Obama “Hope” artwork. It was used on buttons, stickers, posters, tee-shirts and even projected on Hollywood & Highland’s infamous Babylonian Arch (in Los Angeles) during the inauguration. AP (Associated Press) are claiming they own the copyright to the photograph and not only want credit they want compensation.

The Associated Press says:

“The Associated Press has determined that the photograph used in the poster is an AP photo and that its use required permission,”

“AP safeguards its assets and looks at these events on a case-by-case basis. We have reached out to Mr. Fairey’s attorney and are in discussions. We hope for an amicable solution.”

Shepards attorney says:

” We believe fair use protects Shepard’s right to do what he did here.”

The image will be included this month at a Fairey exhibit at the Institute of Contemporary Art in Boston and a mixed-media stenciled collage version has been added to the permanent collection of the National Portrait Gallery in Washington.

Also, After Obama won the Presidential election he wrote a letter to Shepard saying:

“Dear Shepard,” the letter reads. “I would like to thank you for using your talent in support of my campaign. The political messages involved in your work have encouraged Americans to believe they can help change the status quo. Your images have a profound effect on people, whether seen in a gallery or on a stop sign.”

Shepard recently did a TV interview with Charlie Rose (I will post this video after the jump). In the interview he breaks down his art and talks about some of his ideals behind his thinking.

Whether you love him or hate him, Shepard’s “Hope” poster was the beacon for the youth’s relate-ability to our new President. And if this extra push or nudge came in a pop culture direction such as Shepard Fairy… I’m ok with that.

The Moment

Posted by in design, entertainment, politics on January 25th, 2009 @ 4:10 pm

At they have compiled thousands of photos during Obamas Presidential Inauguration and titled them The Moment. Photos were submitted by anyone that attended the Inauguration. Then the compiled photos are layered on top of each other to create a 3D space from the otherwise 2D photos. Basically, It’s a panorama using thousands of submitted images from the people who attended.

CNN has been doing some cool interactive things with their displays/computer monitors. Most of them use a major event to showcase them. Example: the 2008 Election and here in the Presidential Inauguration.

Its pretty cool to click around the audience and see who attended along with seeing Obama, his family and the people around him during The Moment. I found a few actors and senators that were sitting right behind Obama as he was sworn in.

You will need to install a plug in called Silverlight to make it work and be able to interact, but that is it. Super easy and most of the photos are pretty good quality.

Check it out: The Moment

Posted by in politics on January 20th, 2009 @ 9:23 pm

Today is a great day and an exciting time. We are as a country looking like shit right now and Obama is just the guy to get us back on our feet. Incase you don’t have a TV or you can’t stream (cnn) videos at work. Here is Obama’s acceptant speech.

“Hope triumphs over fear”

Also, below is an intresting video of Sheppard Fairey getting the word out.

This is OBAMA’S week. I’ve never been excited about a president before, so this is a new feeling, so far I like it. Its exciting to see him giving artistic types inspiration. One thing is for sure, no one would give a hoot if McCain somehow won. A Bunch of toys give love to Obama from Daft Punk and Adam Freeland in honor of the President-elect. Watch out for Obama flying through space to punch his name into a giant Speak & Spell.

Dear President Bush,

Yes, the world hates you… I wish this smelly shoe would of hit you in your big stupid face. But the look you gave after the first shoe goes by is priceless. I only wish the reporter threw poop instead of a shoe.

My thoughts on Prop 8 and its message.

What Prop 8 is really all about

What Prop 8 is really all about

I think the photo above should sum up my sentiments on the passage of Prop 8.

It’s now been almost 3 weeks since it passed, and with each new weekend, I feel the dread that pretty soon the steam will run out and we will all go back to our complacent, apathetic selves. I know I was one of those people before the election. Not necessarily apathetic, but more along the lines, “This thing will never pass. San Diego, LA, & San Francisco will make up for all the “other” counties who will surely vote for prop 8.”  I know I was not alone in that thinking.

Super Obama World

Posted by in design, entertainment, politics, technology on November 19th, 2008 @ 11:58 am

Introducing Super Obama World. A flash game that plays like the NES original Super Mario Brothers. The pixel graphics and sounds are rad super retro. Reminds me of when I was a kid and we would race home from school to play Double Dribble. Another waste your life away online game brought to you by whateves.

No word yet if Dig (Dug) Joe Biden, has been created yet.

The White House gives the “Shocker”

Posted by in politics, Snapshots, whateves on November 17th, 2008 @ 5:29 pm

Even before Obama is in the white house, Bush is beginning to feel a new vibe in the air.  And he’s obviously accepting it.  See how he’s throwing the shocker within a gang of brothas?  You damn well know Laura’s into that.

This wipes his previous blunders, he’s now a top respected fellow in my book with this type of tude.  Throw on a pair of shades and we’ll pass a law that puts this stud and Cory Worthington secretary of PARTYING DOWN!
