Open Letter to Taco Bell

This past weekend the wife was out of town with the girls. That really means one thing: I eat like total shit. Usually I eat fruit, some chicken, vegetables, soda, some crackers, more fruit and some more soda. Somewhere there’s some cheese in the mix too.

Fresh & Easy Is My New Market

Posted by psmynameisphil in rant, something i ate on July 29th, 2008 @ 11:20 pm

This weekend I officially broke it off with Ralph’s and started shopping at Fresh & Easy. This new market makes it easy for me to shop for all my food. The store is smaller then a tradition market but seems to have everything I need. It is clean (this is huge on my list) and the meats don’t look like they have been sitting out for days. They don’t have a deli or a butcher but that is ok with me. The only thing that I have to get used to is the fruit and veggie section. The fruits and veggies are pre-bundled in bags so you can’t pick and choose by hand. But on a positive note, no one is touching your food (again back to the clean point).

Everyone that works there seems to be a bit on the young side and in positive spirits. They offer a lot of Fresh & Easy brand products and they don’t taste generic. Also, they have been sending me coupons. A months worth at a time. They are good for a week and deduct on your total bill not on individual items.

If you get a chance check a store out. They are popping up all of Los Angeles. Find a Fresh & Easy Market.

Taco Truck parks in downtown shopping mall. In a theme sorta way.

Posted by madex in something i ate, whateves on July 21st, 2008 @ 2:45 pm

I work in Downtown LA. The food down here is boring to say the least. I eat at Weilands Brewery, because they have garlic fries, and the epic Salads 2000, but there is a new Kid on the block, EL Coche. Now I do love me a themed eatery, I guess that is why I can’t stop going to Salads 2000. Where in the future, you get a shit load of salad for 4 dollars, and enough Ice Tea to fill the LA river. So now that Los Angeles Taco Trucks are curbed, they are now parking shopping malls.

Joey Chestnut - “I likes to eat”

Posted by psmynameisphil in something i ate, whateves on July 12th, 2008 @ 9:28 am

July 4th 2008 Joey Chestnut defeats Takeru Kobayashi at the Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest by using the “cannon ball” technique. Bolth were tied at 59< hot dog at the end of the contest, so they went to overtime seeing who could eat 5 hot dogs fastest. With Chestnut winning by one hot dog!

When Joey was asked "why do you do this, why do you put your body through this"... he replied "I love to eat and I love competition". I only wish he would finished the sentence with a "I love American and baby Jesus".

I also love hot dogs and love to eat.

Delicious Alert: Mes Amis in Los Feliz

Posted by dancepartyjulie in Delicious Alert, something i ate, whateves on July 11th, 2008 @ 1:07 pm

I’m not quite sure how I have never noticed, seen or known about Mes Amis before, especially because if you follow my street until it ends at Vermont you end up on it’s patio, but it is amazing and delicious.

Basically, they bisected the old Hollywood Hills Café (sad that it’s gone) into two restaurants, Mes Amis and Cuba Libre (at least I think that’s what it’s called – wasn’t paying attention). (Damn, I’m a fan of Parentheticals, even when used inappropriately). Atmospherically, it is a Francophiles dream, complete with a patio lit with little lights and an interior that can play host to large parties (rare in Los Feliz).

The menu sports a lot of French classics that I would never touch… Frogs Legs, Escargot, Pate… but surprisingly had a large variety of Vegetarian and Vegan options and probably some of the best Freedom Fries I have ever had. EVER. I had:

Polenta Napoleon
Grilled Polenta Cakes with Layered Goat Cheese
mixed with Tomatoes, Olives, Garlic, Basil, Roasted
Peppers, Balsamic Reduction & Frisée

Holy shit kids, this was amazing. Really fantastically delectable. Anne Lee had the Asperagus Benedict minus the Prosciutto (which of course :

Brioche Toast, White Asparagus, Poached Egg,

Prosciutto Crisp and Truffled Hollandaise

Also equally delicious. There are a bunch of other things I want to try… so I see visits in the future.

As an added bonus… and probably my favorite part… On Thursday Paris Loves L.A’s Adele Jacques and her pianist friend sing classic French Pop songs ala Serge Gainsbourg and France Gall – so if you’re gonna go - go on a Thursday. It’s worth it.

Oh and rumor has it that the Cuban place next door has happy hour, 7 days a week, featuring $3 Mojitos.

Small town gets flooded with Ranch Dressing

Posted by sladehayes in Delicious Alert, White People Problems, rant, something i ate, whateves on July 3rd, 2008 @ 9:14 am

Damn you, internet. I am just sitting here eating my lunch, about to head out for the weekend, and here you have me writing about some foolish story of a town getting flooded with ranch dressing. Can’t you leave me alone today? Isn’t it enough that I cuddle close to you in times of loneliness and depression? I look to you when I am scared, curious, angry, amarous and in need of the name of the girl who played Jason Bateman’s sister on “Its Your Move” (Tricia Cast), can’t you just let me go home? I promise that I will check my iPhone a multitude of times on the way back to the house, where the 3 Macs that live there are all connected to your life giving teet at a blazing 15mpbs, but for now just let me go enjoy these potato chips and a quiet afternoon with this new issue of Jet magazine I just mistakenly recived in my mailbox.

If your not hip to Fresh & Easy yet, you need to be. The place is the most well planned out grocery shopping experience. They got all types of things to satisfy the single people and small family’s alike. Their store brand products are pretty good, but hot damn, I picked up some Blue Corn and Chili Lime Crackers for a camping trip I’m going on, and I really wanted to taste ‘em and now they are gone. They are so good. The saltyness from a ritz cracker, the excitement of blue corn in your snack food and the fire from a Mexican hooker. They are really good, check ‘em out when you visit your local Fresh & Easy.

LA Galaxy Bacon Wrapped Hot Dogs

The Los Angeles Galaxy beat The Colorado Rapids 3-2 on Saturday night but more importantly bacon wrapped hot dogs are BACK! I guess they were removed from the menu this season and people were upset. I’ll have to be honest… I never even knew they were gone.

But I had to laugh when I saw that the returning hot dog made the news on the Galaxy website.

Today I went to the opening of The Vegan Spot on Sunset just North of Sunset Junction in Silverlake. This cool girl Sarah just opened it up, along with the people from Flore. And I can’t stop jumping of the walls over how good it was.
More after the jump.

These fun bags are filled with pudding, and only sold in Japan. I am a fan of Whateves’s Japanese resident contributor Brent’s Konbini Life blog, but I haven’t seen these on his website. Brent are these real? Do you eat them? Do they taste like breast milk? Is there an age limit to who can buy them? Do they come with stray nipple hairs?

This Saturday Belmont Shore (in Long Beach, CA) will host its FIRST ever block party on Claremont Street. Store fronts participating in the event will be Frosted Cupcakery, It’s A Grind, Belmont Grill and Belmont Bliss with each store providing something unique for the event.

Frosted Cupcakery will provide delicious cupcakes along with tote bags screen printed live at the event, It’s A Grind will be sampling coffee and providing an opportunity for you to take your picture with “Toddy” their mascot, Belmont Grill will be grilling up burgers and hot dogs and Belmont Bliss will relax you with a chair massage.

The theme is “dixieland” so think Main Street Disneyland and Marry Poppins with a real live dixieland band playing the whole time. With the help of the Frosted Cupcakery staff, you can get a cupcake painted on your face. And finally, there will be a raffle every 30 minutes for the chance to win prizes from the participating store fronts.

Oh yeah and balloons…lots of balloons.
